Perryton’s 7^th Annual “Toys for Tots” Toy Run washeld recently to benefit several organizations such as Toys for Tots, BigBrothers Big Sisters, Perryton Crisis Center, and Area Children and Families.The required entry fee was either a toy or game. Then several people biked tolocal businesses and collected toys and other donations. Deblen Francis hasbeen involved with this organization for several years. He says, “Being part ofthis toy run is a fun way to give back to the community. You get to ride for agood cause.” Dianne Felix and Silvia Crawley may not ride with Deblen, but theylike the fact that their donations help ensure that Christmas will come tothose less fortunate through the spirit of giving.

Donnie Shoemaker was a quiet man. He even laughed quietly. If he thought something was humorous, a slow smile would cross his face. His co-workers’ descriptions of him are similar: “slow and steady wins the race,” “easy going,” “soft spoken,” “laid-back,” and “a worker not a talker.” Getting in a hurry was not his style, and if he didn’t understand how something worked, he kept at it until he figured it out. He was a dedicated and hardworking employee, willing to learn new technologies. If you asked him a question and he did not have an immediate answer, you can bet he had an answer for you by the end of the day. He could southern engineer most anything and make it work. He was a natural at fixing stuff, and sometimes out of the blue, he would treat his co-workers to a tasty afternoon snack of ice cream drumsticks, just because.Donnie was an amazing cook. He could take any type of meat and turn it into a work of art. Donnie put family first. He was proud of his wife Linda and his daughters Jamie and Dana. Jamie is the mother of his three wonderful grandkids, and Dana proudly serves her country in the US Air Force. He even kept Dana’s combat boots from basic training in his cubicle. Donnie Shoemaker passed away on Wednesday, October 5, 2011. He will be missed as a husband, father, grandfather, co-worker, friend, and cook. Rest well, Shoe.

PTCI’s new community website go.ptci.net is a tailor-made homepage just for you. Changing your home page is a snap. Just follow the directions below for the four major browsers:

Internet Explorer Windows:
1. Click “Tools” and “Internet Options”
2. In the “Home Page” section of the “ Internet Options” screen, type in the address of the new PTCI web page, go.ptci.net in the “Address” box
3. Click the “Apply” button
4. Click “OK”

Safari:
1. In Safari, click the “Safari” menu, choose “Preferences.”
2. In the dialog box, click “General.”
3. Type in go.ptci.net in the “Home Page” box.
4. Click the red “Close” button in the upper right-hand corner of the window to save your changes

Send a TEXT in an Emergency

this article applies to help all cell phone users in any emergency.)

The recent fires in the Oklahoma Panhandle have caused many of us to sit back and evaluate a “plan-of-action” should we need to evacuate in the future. While we all pray it won’t be necessary again, we need to stop and think about communication in times of emergency.
Many area residents who live in the evacuated areas weren’t able to place or receive cellular phone calls during the emergency situation in Guymon this past April. Evacuees were trying to make calls, as were their friends and families trying to contact them. It’s human nature…we want to know if everyone is okay.
But what happened to communication was unavoidable due to the massive number of calls placed on the network. “Busy Circuits” and “Your Call Can’t Go Through” messages were common, frustrating callers beyond measure. Emergency agencies were utilizing the network as they worked to get control of the situation, while residents were desperately trying to reach loved ones.
Next time an incident like this happens and your cell call won’t go through, try sending a text message. Text messages don’t use the same bandwidth that voice calls do; so many times they’ll go through. There’s no guarantee in an emergency situation that your text message will be delivered, but a text message has a much better shot at making it through than a voice call does.

Congratulations Rowdy McBee...Farewell Kelly Kilgore

After serving 25 years on the PTCI Board of Trustees, H. A. “Kelly” Kilgore of Hooker made the decision to retire. An election was held at the Hooker District Meeting, where Rowdy McBee was elected to represent the Hooker exchange for a three-year term. At other District Meetings held in Hardesty and Plainview Schools last month, Charles Russell was re-elected to serve as trustee for the Texhoma/Keyes/Griggs exchanges; while Scott Martin will continue to represent the Hardesty/Bryans Corner/Balko exchanges. Kelly served as trustee during the acquisition of the GTE exchanges. We will miss you Kelly!

Parental Controls are a free service to PTCI Digital TV customers. Concerned parents can prevent their children from accessing adult-oriented or other inappropriate programming by following these easy steps on your remote control.
To access Parental Controls:
• Press Menu
• Scroll down to Settings
• Highlight Parental Controls and press Select
• It will ask you for a Pin Number. Default is set at 9999, unless you have changed it.
• This will give you the option of controlling the programming by rating or to actually hide channels.
To Hide Channels:
• Scroll down to Edit, and press select
• Scroll and highlight the channels you want to “Hide”
• Press the Select key on each channel you want to remove. The highlighted button will now say “Off”.
• After selecting channels to be hidden, highlight the “Save & Exit” and press select.
• The channels you have chosen (changed to Off) will no longer be shown on the Guide and can not be seen until you go back into the Parental Controls and turn them ON.

Kevin Ottinger drives a truck for a living. Like most of us, he listens to the radio while driving. Unlike most of us, he also does impersonations, while driving. One typical-truck driving, radio-listening day, he heard about an impersonation contest that was being offered on “The Howard Stern Show”. Thinking he might try his luck and enter, Kevin recorded his impersonation on BlackBerry® Voice Notes and sent it to Howard Stern on his PTCI BlackBerry® Tour™ cell phone. Howard liked what he heard and invited Kevin to New York to be one of five finalists on the show. Kevin’s travel arrangements to New York were also made with his BlackBerry Tour. He said, “My BlackBerry Tour worked great in New York.” In fact, he stated, “My PTCI cell phone works great everywhere.” Kevin has been interested in doing impersonations for several years, but never suspected his hobby would turn into such an unexpected adventure. He didn’t win, but had a great time. He stated, “None of this would have ever happened without my BlackBerry Tour cell phone from PTCI.”

EQUINOX SUN OUTAGES: Many readers reported an intermittent loss of satellite TV reception over the weekend. Was the sun to blame? Yes and no. Senior forecaster Bill Murtagh of NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center explains: "It is likely that the sun caused the problem, but not because of solar flares. Now is the time of year for the 'equinox conjunction,' when the sun lines up with the satellite and the receiving satellite dish. When this happens, radio interference from the sun competes with signals from the satellite and can create noise levels several decibels higher than normal. The problem, which typically persists for 5 to 15 minutes, is referred to as a 'sun outage' and is often confused with sunspot or solar flare activity."

Channeling Networks

From time to time we receive TV network requests from our customers. When that happens, if it’s feasible, we attempt to add them to our lineup. We always want to keep our customers happy and satisfied with their Digital TV service. Over the last year PTCI has added these channels because of customer requests:

• Sportsman Channel
• Speed HD
• FX HD
• Fox Sports Southwest HD and Fox Sports Plus
• The CW
• CNBC and CNBC HD
• SyFy HD
• Oxygen HD
• Oklahoma City networks in HD

Television content providers control access to their networks. Many of them package a group of networks together and require television providers to purchase all of them or none, increasing the cost. (An example of this would be the ESPN Networks which include ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, and ESPN Classic.) Sometimes these networks are not popular and have limited viewership.

PTCI still wants to hear your requests! Whenever you have a special network you would like to have on your PTCI Digital TV, call your local customer service representative or e-mail comments@ptsi.net. We will investigate the possibility of providing them.

This is a program developed by the Foundation for Rural Service and sponsored by telephone cooperatives. Above and Beyond…Travis Clark and PTCI Helping the Youth Shelter

Travis Clark, PTCI Project Manager/Call Center Supervisor, donates his expertise in wiring for the telephone, Internet, and television services for the new Youth Shelter. Travis enjoys helping, especially when it has anything to do with kids. Believing that we all need help sometime, Travis said, “I guess my idea is to just keep the belief that people still care.”

The Youth Shelter provides emergency short-term placement for children birth to 18 years. The next fund raiser for the shelter will be a murder mystery dinner theatre at Pickle Creek February 11, 12, 13. Donations should be made to Guymon Community Enrichment Foundation and earmarked for Panhandle Services for Children in Crisis.

Stay Connected During Winter Storms

Because electrical outages are common during blizzards and ice storms, PTCI installed permanent backup generators in critical locations, along with portable generators for emergency power at secondary sites. In the event equipment is damaged, we keep materials on hand so our crews can quickly restore service where needed.

Here are some tips to help keep you connected during a winter storm.

• Have at least one simple, corded phone at home. Landline phone service is typically available during a power outage. Remember that a cordless telephone will not function without electricity.

• If a storm is approaching, keep your cellular phone and backup batteries charged. Be aware that cell phone towers typically run on commercial and battery power. When that power is interrupted or exhausted, cellular phone service can be disrupted.

• Have a car charger adapter for your cellular phone so you can recharge the phone’s battery from your car.

PTCI and its Employees Brighten the Holiday’s for Needy Families

For many years, employees of PTCI have brought holiday joy to less fortunate families in our community. This year employees collected $1,145.17 with a match of $1,000 approved by PTCI Management and the Trustee of PTCI bringing their total to $2,145.17. PTCI was able to purchase Christmas gifts for 10 children in three families with funds leftover to donate $525 to Loaves and Fishes. For the many employees at PTCI this yearly project captures the true spirit of Christmas. To a needy child, the gift of a shiny new toy means that someone cares and that Christmas hasn’t passed them by.

Director of Human Resources Mitzi Dain who heads the project every year said, “PTCI’s employees are a rare group of people. Whether it is an employee in need or a need in the community, they always come through with generous support.”

PTCI and its employees encourage others to take part in The Star Tree, Loaves and Fishes and other worthwhile community projects now and throughout the year.

Former PTCI Board Member Passes Away

Farrell D. (Wayne) Bowers, 75, of Turpin, OK, passed away December 21, 2010 at OU Medical Center in Oklahoma City. Wayne was born June 14, 1935 in Tyrone, Oklahoma to Mark and Thelma (Houseman) Bowers. He is preceded in death by his parents, and one son, Stacy. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn; one sister, Iris Strait; two sons, Bret Bowers and wife Nora, and Kelly Bowers and Marla of Adams; two daughters, Kris Rider and husband Bart of Broken Arrow, and Amy Tharp of Stillwater; grandchildren, Delci and husband Denny Windell, Bret Bowers Jr. and wife Amy, Laci and Andrew Bowers, Lyndon Tharp and wife Misty, Cassidy Tharp, Adam and Sydnie Rider, and Mikayla Bowers,; and great-grandchildren, Aliyah Bowers, Masyn Tharp, and Elly Bowers. Wayne was a graduate of Adams high school and attended college at Northwestern in Alva before enlisting in the Army. After his service he returned to Turpin to take over the family farm. He continued to farm and ranch with his two sons for the duration of his life. He was a member of Turpin Baptist Church. He also served as a board member of Panhandle Telephone Company for 28 years. Wayne was beloved by his family, and will be greatly missed. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, December 27, 2010, at Turpin Baptist Church. The Family requests that memorials be sent to the Turpin Baptist Church or the Senior Citizen Center.

PTCI has been asked if they are blocking cellular calls to and from a nationwide carrier AT&T.
Fact: No. PTCI cannot block calls from or to AT&T cellular customers.
Fact: AT&T GSM technology does not work PTCI’s CDMA technology. GSM technology requires a sim card inserted in the cellular phone. CDMA does not use sim cards. The technology differences means neither company can reciprocate to process cellular calls nor enter into roaming agreements to process cellular calls.

Do I Want a Smartphone or a Feature Phone?

In order to decide between a smartphone and a feature phone, you may first wonder just what the differences are. Wikipedia describes smartphones as similar to handheld computers that are integrated with a mobile telephone. Phones that are not smartphones are called feature phones. Typically, smartphones have advanced capabilities beyond most feature phones. Smartphones run on standard operating systems that enable the use of third-party applications (apps). Compared to feature phones, smartphones usually have larger displays and more powerful processors. Other aspects of smartphones may include, but are not limited to, HTML Web browsers in lieu of the less user-friendly mobile Web (WAP), automatic sending and receiving e-mails, document editing, calendar syncing, and QWERTY keyboards, although some feature phones also provide some of these characteristics.

Broadband Speeds in Rural America Could Be Limited

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has proposed a new broadband plan that may impact your service. The proposal promises Internet speeds of 100 Mbps to at least 100 million Americans by the year 2020, but establishes a dangerously low threshold of just 4 Mbps for rural/high cost areas such as the Oklahoma Panhandle. Rural consumers, businesses, farms, hospitals, schools, libraries, etc. will have substandard service while urban areas get speeds of 25 times faster. Reliable, high-speed broadband has become the essential service of today. Broadband can improve the lives of all consumers, but access is especially important for those of us living in rural America. The Internet gives small businesses the opportunity to reach customers nationwide, offers local students the chance to take classes online and allows doctors to remotely diagnose patients and even offer remote emergency care.
The Communications Act requires that rural consumers have access to communications services at prices that are affordable and reasonably comparable to those available in urban areas. Rather than support this same universal service philosophy for broadband, the FCC’s plan offers faster, better services to some Americans while guaranteeing lesser service to others.
Don’t let the FCC keep our rural community on the slow side of the digital divide. You deserve comparable speed at affordable prices. The FCC and Congress must redirect the broadband plan to ensure 100 Mbps service is the goal for ALL consumers, not just a select few. Contact your congressional representative. Urge them to support regulatory action that ensures equal access to broadband for all Americans.

Admit it. You’ve done it. You’ve texted while driving. It’s a dangerous habit drivers have developed. In fact, it is more dangerous than drinking and driving! We Americans do love technology in the palm of our hands.
Car and Driver conducted a road test and concluded that reaction time when texting is even slower than when drinking. Studies show 60% of Americans are guilty of driving while texting. Distraction is a factor in nearly 80% of all car crashes. In June of 2008, 75 billion text messages were sent in the United States, compared to 7.2 billion in June 2005. Several states have laws banning texting while driving. In March, the Oklahoma Senate voted to define distracted driving to include violation of traffic laws while using personal communication devices, including cell phones. Various automakers have taken the initiative to make texting and driving safer. Your cell phone works with voice commands hands-free technology so you can focus on driving.

We hear keys jingling and anticipate your impish grin. We brace ourselves for your latest mischief. Instead, another employee appears, and we sadly remember that you are gone.
We sense your presence lurking around the corner, waiting to startle us, ready to pull yet another prank. We think of your unmerciful teasing and realize that was your way of connecting. Arising to the occasion you communicated volumes using one of your favorite sayings.
Looking for the white truck pulling a trailer, we envision you wearing that familiar safari hat. Then we spot the rig parked up the hill near your home. The sight amplifies the fact that you are gone.
In our memories, we see you purposefully stride across the room, intent on a mission. We wonder how you maintained that special lilting bounce when you walked at such a fast clip. Places to go, people to see! Still, you were never too busy to acknowledge the little ones in our lobby, affectionately calling the little girls “George.” Yes, you were liberal with your nicknames, and we had a few pet names for you, too!
When you became Mayor of Guymon we gave you heck. We knew that you were serving because you wanted to make a difference. But, we used it for our get-even moment as we bowed in homage and presented the tacky Panhandle bouquet.
You led by good example. The quote on your office wall sums it up, “Leadership is Action, not position.” Though you were a supervisor, no job was beneath you. You saw the need and went to work. It didn’t matter if it was moving furniture, unstopping a toilet, or cleaning graffiti off the retaining wall. (Who will do the dirty jobs now?)
You were not one for fanfare or fuss. You were not the White Knight charging to the rescue in time of crisis. You were the Knight remaining to help when the dust had settled and others had gone their way.
You were the big brother and the substitute father. You were the shoulder for the widow to lean on. Aware of the need, you calmly offered a solution. You used your connections to help others find affordable homes to call their own. Whether it was investments, cars, housing, or personal matters, you shared wisdom and knowledge far beyond your 47 years.
Fair, honest, blunt, funny, ornery, capable, friendly, hard-working, trustworthy, reliable, impartial, never stopping, protective, and ALWAYS helping…that was you. Now, you are gone…but not forgotten.
